Hard work, the determination of volunteers and the generosity of business have achieved the goal of the ALBANIAN CHILDREN FOUNDATION established by Mr. Domenick Scaglione in 1996 setting up the mission to help children in need irrespective of faith or ethnic background and to support institutions which assist such children. The initial fund was a private donation of the founder Mr. Scaglione. To support collecting financial support for the Foundation in Albania, Mr. Scaglione also established a US arm of the Foundation – the Albanian Children Fund. Mr. Scaglione in Albania invited several personalities to join the Foundation as Honorary Members and support increasing the awareness on the needs of the Albanian children.

The members of the board, mainly young Albanian professionals included Lauresha Basha, Albina Mancka, Suela Totokoci, Salih Tagani, joined the Foundation working on pro bono basis. Mrs Karin Roncari was elected President of the Foundation 1998 and remained until October 2006. There have been also individuals who have made a tremendous effort to achieve the Foundation aims who must be mentioned: Mrs. Cristina Busi, Mrs. Lidra Mejdani, and Mrs. Ann Kikby. Through the generosity of these people who gave the time willingly and voluntarily every cent donated has gone to the improvement of the health of status of the Albanian Children.

The Foundation set up the tradition in Albania to organize every year a benefit ball to collect funds for the various project. This benefit balls were a great opportunity to spread out awareness within the local and international community in Albania for children in need. It has been one of the biggest achievement of the foundation that the number of Albanian individuals and companies donating has been increasing tremendously during these years, going form almost 100% foreigners in 1996 to more that 90% Albanian in 2006.

Achievements

- Over 40 children from all over Albania were sent abroad for medical treatment and surgeries i.e. talassemia, multiple sclerosis, eye surgery, spine surgery, heart surgery, moya – moya disease surgery, cancer, to countries such as Italy, Greece, Great Britain, Germany, USA, Switzerland, Russia, Austria costing an average of US$ 7,000 (covering trip and living expenses for child and family in addition to the medical treatment itself).

- During the Kosova crises the Foundation worked together with “Don Bosco” and “Maria Mazzarello” Centers to help building provisory centers for children protecting them from the sun and bad whether, donating clothes and toys.

- The Foundation donated in goods US$ 10,000 to the orphanage of Saranda and financed the education of two orphans, placed at the private Turkish boarding school of Kavaja for the secondary studies for an amount of US$ 20,000. Kreshnik and Eduard are now successfully following university studies supported by another sponsor that the Foundation found for them.

- The Foundation supported the Blood Transfusion Center in the Mother Theresa Hospital buying for them iceboxes for the blood, television for the center, butterfly needles for the transfusion and financed the participation in a Talassemia Convention in Cyprus for one doctor of the center.

- During our two first years of operation, the Foundation was constantly confronted with the illness of talassemia and the board realized that there were so many cases that there is no Foundation which can support financially all the cases and therefore it was decided to invest in a “Center for Molecular and Genetic Diagnostic Research” to help Albanian children in the prevention of talassemia and other prenatal diseases. The total project took 3 years to be finalized and included: a US$ 300,000 in latest technology equipment, a one year provision of kits for US$ 70,000, US$ 20,000 in construction for improving the designated space for the lab, US$ 25,000 for training and transport in a special laboratory in Rome, Italy and US$ 12,000 for one year supplementary salary for two Albanian doctors.

From individual cases to infrastructure projects – this was a big step in advance.

In 2006, Mrs. Liri Berisha joined the Albanian Children Foundation becoming the new President. The biggest challenge to start was the implementation of a regional center in Lushnja which took one year to be finalized and was another great investment of the Foundation of approximately US$ 150,000 including state of art technology, furniture and kits supply.
